Slow and cautious commute this morning

Slow and cautious commute this morning

It was a slow and cautious commute from Cascade to Walker this morning.  The streets, ramps and freeways were slippery in spots.  The roadways ranged from clear to slushy for the morning commute.  I saw one abandoned vehicle on I-96 but no accidents or vehicles in the ditch.

Many schools are closed today, including the Forest Hills Public Schools, Forest Hills Presbyterian Preschool, Kenowa Hills Public Schools, and Walker Charter Academy.

School Starts Tuesday

School Starts Tuesday

From: http://www.eastgr.org

The Public Safety Department reminds everyone that school begins on Tuesday, September 6th. This means many more students walking to and from school and more vehicles in the vicinity of the school buildings in the mornings and afternoons. Please use extra caution in the next few weeks as people get used to the new routines.

If your child is walking to school in the early mornings, please make sure they are wearing light-colored, reflective clothing as it is darker in the mornings during the fall than we are currently used to.

Wilson Avenue widening and resurfacing starts Friday in Walker

HIGHWAY: M-11 (Wilson Avenue)

START DATE: Friday, July 22, 2011

ESTIMATED END DATE: Monday, Aug. 29, 2011

MDOT will be widening and resurfacing one-half mile of Wilson Avenue from south of Riverbend Drive to north of Hall Street. The widening will accommodate a center left-turn lane.

Traffic shifts will be used to maintain one lane of traffic in each direction throughout the project. Traffic will be maintained under flag control from 8 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday during several weekends.

This investment will increase safety, improve traffic flow and extend the service life of the roadway.

Bristol Avenue Improvements

The City of Walker will be starting a project to resurface Bristol Avenue between Three and Four Mile Roads on August 1st.  The contractor will use a flag man and a single lane closure for the first 2 weeks.  Then we expect a 3 week period where the road will be closed to through traffic.  That will be followed by intermittent lane closures and flag control as they wrap up the project in early September.

The project is primarily an asphalt overlay of the existing pavement but will include the addition of 4’ paved shoulders and a designated center turn lane at Four Mile Road.

Section of 3 Mile Road Closed 6/10 and 6/11
