Register now for the Color Me Rad 5K race

Get signed up for this fun 5K race, which benefits Helen DeVos Children's Hospital.

The Color Me Rad 5k is May 25 at Millennium Park, located at 1415 Maynard Avenue SW in My Town Walker. At 9 a.m.,  waves of runners will meet their match when the color bombs fly. In the end each runner will have a design all their own.

 The registration deadline for the Color Me Rad 5k is May 22.  If you'd like to volunteer for the color bomb squad, visit www.colormerad.com .  Volunteers must be 16 years or older.

Registered participants can pick up their packets at the big tent on Thursday, May 23 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. or Friday, May 24 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Kroc Center offers pass deal to participants in Mayor's Bike Ride

The Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center is teaming up with the city of Grand Rapids to show just how bicycle friendly our area is.

The Kroc Center will offer a buy one, get one pass deal to bicyclists on Tuesday, May 21, as part of the Mayor’s Bike Ride.  The annual ride starts at 6:30 p.m. at the entrance to Plaster Creek Trails at the Kroc Center, located on 2500 S. Division Ave.

The 5th annual Mayor’s Bike Ride introduces the average bike rider to Grand Rapids’ bike trail system.  Participants can travel 2 miles or 6 miles from the Kroc Center, or choose a 24 mile ride to Millennium Park, led by Alger Bikes.  All paricipants are required to wear a properly fitted helmet.

Hunter safety classes offered in Marne

The Marne Conservation Club is offering hunter safety classes for anyone who is interested.

Classes will be held May 16 and 17  from 5 p.m.  to 9 p.m. and again on May 18  from 8 a.m.  to noon.

Certification requires that participants attend all three sessions.  Classes are held at Marne Conservation Club, located at 1719 Johnson St. in Marne. Registration can be made by calling Bill Walters at (616) 583-1968.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Experience Grand Rapids and the Kent County Lodging Association have opened the 6th Annual WAVE Award nominations.

The annual awards program recognizes outstanding service providers in the Grand Rapids and Kent County hospitality industry. Nominations will be accepted from employers and guests from April 30 to Oct.7, 2013. One award will be presented in each of the following categories: Transportation, Retail & Service, Attractions/Events, and Nightlife. New categories to the 2013 awards program include: Restaurants/Breweries, Lodging, and Volunteer in Hospitality.

The School Makeover, presented by Farm Bureau Insurance and the Detroit Pistons, is accepting submissions from elementary and middle schools in the state of Michigan, through June 1. Jared Bradford, Athlete of the Week

Jared Bradford has been named Athlete of the Week at Sparta High School. He excels at tennis and golf, both all conference.

Jared also led in scoring in basketball along with leading in assists. He holds the title as team leader in free throw percentage and 3 – point field goals. Sparta was the District Champions in basketball for the second year in a row.

At this time, Jared has no immediate plans for college.
