Kamyszek races at Stanford University

2010 graduate of Kenowa Hills High Reed Kamyszek, who is now a freshman at Syracuse University in NY, ran in the first outdoor 5K Track Meet of the season at Stanford University in California last weekend. Reed finished in 10th place with a time of 14:33.

Cummings Family Skating Party held this past Wednesday

On Wednesday night, March 30, students from Cummings Elementary in Standale gathered at the Walker Ice and Fitness Center to enjoy a night of skating.  The children and their families could bring their skates, or for $3.00 could rent either figure or hockey-style skates, and spend time gliding around the surface with friends and fellow classmates.  Food was also provided for the time when legs got tired and that inevitable hunger struck.  A fun, incident free, time was had, and except for the occasional spill, everyone came away from the event with smiles on their faces, a few sore muscles, and maybe a bump or two.  Plus, I for one have not slept as soundly, as I did that night, in quite a while!

The Walker Recreation Department is accepting applications for umpires for their Girl’s Softball Program. The Girl’s Softball Program is offered for girls ages 6 through 13. The season will begin on April 26, 2011. Games will be played on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Softball experience is necessary.

Umpire applications are also being accepted for the Adult softball program. The Adult softball season begins the week of June 6, 2011. Leagues are offered for men, women, and co-ed teams on Monday through Thursday evenings. Participation in Walker Recreation umpiring classes is required.

Co-Ed Youth Spring Soccer Program Available

The Walker Recreation Department will be offering a Co-Ed Spring Soccer Program for boys and girls 5 through 13 years of age. Cost for the 5-6 year old age group is $20.00 for City of Walker residents and $30.00 for non-residents of the City of Walker. Cost for the 7-8 year old, 9-10 year old and 11-12-13 year old age groups is $30.00 for City of Walker residents and $40.00 for non-residents of the City of Walker. Practices will begin the week of April 11th and games will begin on Saturday, April 23, 2011.
Registration forms will be sent home with students at area schools and are also available at www.ci.walker.mi.us, at the Walker Ice and Fitness Center, and by clicking here. Registration must be made in person at the Walker Ice and Fitness Center, 4151 Remembrance Road, NW, during open business hours. Deadline for registration is February 26, 2011.

Adult Softball Registration Begins March 28th

The Walker Recreation Department offers Adult Softball Leagues for Men's, Women's and Coed teams.  All leagues will have an eight game schedule beginning the week of June 6, 2011.  Registration will be March 28th through April 9th at the Walker Ice and Fitness Center during open business hours.  Team entry fee is $320 per team.  There is also a $12 non-resident fee for any player that does not live or work in the city of Walker.  Information packets are available at the Walker Ice and Fitness Center and at www.ci.walker.mi.us  For more information call the Walker Recreation Department at 616-735-6286.

Kenowa Hills Gymnastics Team Wins Regionals

Congratulations to the gymnastics team for winning regionals with a score of 144.225. Megan Lee was the All Around champion with a score of 35.95. She also won the Bars with an 8.95. She was 3rd on Beam, 4th on Vault, and 5th on the Floor. Elizabeth Carpenter was 4th in the All Around. The team will compete at home on Friday, and Megan and Elizabeth will compete on Saturday, also, in the individual events.

Mike Fountain hired as Ice Director at Walker Ice and Fitness

The City of Walker is pleased to announce that it has hired Mike Fountain as the new Ice Director at the Walker Ice and Fitness facility.  Mike has been part of the professional hockey community for nearly twenty years, including professional playing experience with the Carolina Hurricanes, Ottawa Senators and Vancouver Canucks.  Mike also played professional hockey in Russia and represented Canada with the Canadian National Team and the Gold Medal Spengler Cup team during that time.
