The Global Invitational Water Ski Championships will be making its debut at Millennium Park on July 9-10, 2011. The world’s top professional water ski athletes will compete in traditional slalom and long-distance jumping for $45,000 in prize money. Free-style jumping, wakeboarding, barefoot skiing, hydrofoil, and show skiing will round out the exciting two-day event. The Kent County Parks and Recreation is estimating 10,000 spectators.

“The Global Invitational is great example of the Kent County Park system bringing quality programming to Millennium Park for the benefit of the entire region. Unique events such as the Global Invitational attract participants and spectators from across the country, helping to shine the light nationally on Kent County Parks,” said event organizer Dana Reed.

2010 Kenowa Grad completes Freshman College year with honors

Reed Kamyszek, 2010 Kenowa Hills graduate, completed his freshman year at Syracuse University in NY with a 4.0 GPA. Even though he is finished with his academics for this year, he is still at school until the 25th of June for track.

Reed said, “I do not have any races scheduled as of now until USATF Junior Nationals, where I will be running in Eugene, OR, at Hayward Field, in the 5K on Saturday, June 25th. I feel like I have done well my freshman year with big personal records in the 5K (14:26) and 3K (8:20) on the track.

My cross country did not go as well as I hoped for, as I felt like I didn’t come around until near the end of the season. I had a decent race in San Diego where we raced the USATF Junior XC Nationals, where I placed 13th in the 8K with a time of 25:32.

My coaches are pleased with my performances, especially during indoor season, when I posted some fast times at Boston University indoor track.

Great park in Walker!

Great park in Walker!

Last weekend my wife and I took our niece and 2 dogs to Millenium Park in Walker. It was my first time there but I was very impressed with the facility. There was a nice playground that my niece played on and lots of grass for our dogs to run around in. We stayed dry on this journey but I think our next visit we'll take advantage of the nice sandy beach and the small water park. (All of the water entertainment is included for $4.00 per adult entry)

Blandford Nature Center

Blandford Nature Center

A couple of weekends ago, my son and I had a wonderful visit to Blandford Nature Center. We were able to take part in their maple syrup festivities. There are many events that happen at the center for adults and children. Blandford Nature Center is a great way to get out of the house with the family and enjoy a spring walk on the trails.

I would suggest stopping in the store to get some of their maple syrup. I don't even like the taste of syrup and this stuff is incredible!! YUMMY! My son loves it too!

Below is a link to their website so you can find directions and possibly some events you may like to attend.

Have fun!!

Fred Meijer Standale Trail

Fred Meijer Standale Trail

I recently discovered the new Fred Meijer Standale Trail. It is a running/biking trail that goes from Wilson and 3 Mile taking you south to Millennium Park and eventually connects to Kent Trails. The section I have been running, between Remembrance and Lake Michigan Drive, has nicely paved paths, a few wooden bridges and plenty of backyard and wooded scenery. This is an excellent trail to walk, run, bike, or roller-blade.
