Even in these days of digital everything, third graders still get excited over receiving a dictionary all their own.
Kinney Grange No. 754 has handed out more than 1000 dictionaries to Kenowa Hills third grade students since 1995.Granges across the nation raise money every year to buy dictionaries for these students and others.
Tracy Horodysky, a teacher of 15 years at Zinser Elementary, says her students still love to read the dictionary. “They use it as a writer’s tool to help them with their stories,” she said. The dictionary is still one of the most powerful things a student can keep right on their desk.
One Grange member, Emma Dausman of Walker said, “It is fun just to see their expressions as the book becomes theirs,” when handing out the books.
