Local student’s creative writing entry wins Moral Focus Writing Contest

Leading charter school operator National Heritage Academies (NHA) today announced that a student from Walker Charter Academy was one of three students from schools across the country to have been chosen winner of the 2011-2012 NHA Moral Focus Writing Contest.

The writing contest—intended to encourage students to reflect on and creatively write about moral focus virtues they learned throughout the school year, such as integrity, respect and gratitude—selects three winning students from NHA’s 71 schools based on elements of creativity, grammar and how well their writing exemplifies one of NHA’s moral focus virtues. In the 6-8th grade division, seventh grade student Grace  McClure of Walker Charter Academy in Walker took first place.

Fourth grade students at Walker Charter Academy visited the Lansing Capitol Building and Michigan Historical Museum to broaden their appreciation of Michigan’s rich history.

Before visiting the museum, the students viewed a video about the changes that the capitol building underwent during its years of service and the restoration that occurred to preserve a piece of Michigan’s history.  At the capitol building, students were also toured the House and Senate chambers where Michigan’s laws are made.

The trip sought to deepen students’ understanding of how Michigan fulfills the purpose of government by making and enforcing laws that protect individual rights.
