Brendan Kosnik, Student of the Week

Brendan Kosnik, a senior at West Catholic High School, has been involved in every possible class/organization he can that has anything to do with Math. He will be graduating with a 4.537 GPA and still had time to participate in soccer for all four years of high school.

Brendan belongs to the National Honor Society, Life Force Team, Catholics in Action, Quiz Bowl team, Math field day and Math Challenge, his freshman and sophomore years, a challenge that took them to first place.

As expected, Brendan will be studying Mathematics at the University of Michigan next fall.

Student of the Week, Nick Schweitzer

Apparently Nick Schweitzer, a senior at West Catholic High School, has an agenda when it comes to being involved and helping where he is needed.

Nick went to St. Louis last summer to help out on a mission trip, something he thoroughly enjoyed. He is an Eagle Scout, volunteers at Kid’s Food Basket, belongs to the youth group at Holy Trinity Parish and is a Whitecap’s Mascot.

Along with all of the afore mentioned things he is involved with, Nick also belongs to Drama Club, performing in Shakespeare plays, Liturgical Choir, Writing Club, is Class Secretary and tutors. Now, that’s one busy guy!

Nick plans to attend Frederik Meijer Honors College at GVSU and study Secondary Math Education.

The School Makeover, presented by Farm Bureau Insurance and the Detroit Pistons, is accepting submissions from elementary and middle schools in the state of Michigan, through June 1. Submissions at www.nba.com/pistons/farm-bureau-school-makeover should include at least four images of the school’s library or gymnasium to be considered in the selection process.

College Classes Opportunity at Kenowa Hills High

Middle College is a big hit at Kenowa Hills High School according to Principal, Katie Pennington. Kenowa is the first high school in the area to offer this program and the response has been tremendous. The school is paying for the program by sharing its’ per-pupil funding from the state with Davenport University. The university has also waived some fees making the program cost neutral for the district, according to Kenowa Hills Superintendent, Gerald Hopkins.

Classes are limited and require students to actually take a year beyond the usual 12th grade to complete their studies. Classes for their degree are offered either first thing in the morning or late afternoon.

Inaugural junior class surpasses national average ACT scores

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.-- Wellspring Preparatory High School’s junior class averaged a 23.4 score on the ACT, a curriculum and standards-based tool that assesses readiness for college.

The 2012 ACT report indicated the national average at 21.1 and state average at 20.1 out of a possible 36.

“This average truly reflects the hard work and dedication of our students and faculty,” said Wellspring Preparatory High School Principal Koree Woodward.  “We are dedicated to guiding our students down a path that will lead to life-long success and they are committed to putting in the effort that will help to position them for college.”

Alayna Stratton, Student of the Week

Alayna Stratton, Student of the Week

West Catholic Senior, Alayna Stratton, was named Student of the Week. She belongs to the National Honor Society, is a student ambassador and was a member of the girl’s varsity basketball team.

Alayna coaches youth basketball and works part time at Sandy’s Donuts while maintaining a 4.015 GPA! She plans to pursue a career in nursing but has not decided on a particular college at this time.
