My Town: Crews gut shuttered Alpine Avenue restaurant

My Town: Crews gut shuttered Alpine Avenue restaurant

WALKER, Mich.—A building on Alpine Avenue that’s been home to numerous restaurants will no longer be serving up meals.

Construction crews this week are gutting the former Wild Chef Restaurant at 3303 Alpine Ave.  The site was previously home to a Bennigan’s restaurant.

Walker building official Tim Musser says the building will be split into two businesses—a Mattress Firm on the south side and The Vitamin Shoppe on the north side.

At least two other mattress stores have opened or are planned for Alpine Avenue; Art Van opened its Pure Sleep shop in the former Hallmark storefront at 3450 Alpine Ave. NW late last year and plans are in place to open a Sleep Doctor Mattress store at 4235 Alpine Ave., in Alpine Township.

Musser says developers have already obtained all the necessary permits to convert the former Wild Chef restaurant, which abruptly closed Sunday, June 1.  It’s unclear when the new businesses will open to the public.

Caught Being Safe program launches statewide

Michigan State Police, local law enforcement and Michigan’s Field Neurosciences Institute have teamed up with McDonald’s of Michigan to once again launch “Caught Being Safe,” a statewide bicycle/scooter helmet safety program. Kids wearing helmets and “caught being safe” by participating law enforcement officials will treated to a free ice cream cone or Apple Dippers at McDonald’s.

According to the Field Neurosciences Institute (of Michigan): “Caught Being Safe! has shown a significant increase in both helmet utilization and public awareness regarding the critical importance of wearing a bicycle helmet. This program has impacted not only children but adults as well.”

My Town Walker: Alpine Avenue restaurant closes for good

WALKER, Mich.—Another Alpine Avenue restaurant has shut its doors for good.

Wild Chef Steakhouse opened at 3303 Alpine Ave. less than three years ago.  The restaurant served its last meal Sunday, June 1.

The answering machine at the business says all gift certificates to Wild Chef will be honored at the restaurant’s original location in Holland, at 2863 West Shore Drive, Suite 112.

It’s been a tough year for the owners of Wild Chef.  In April, the Holland restaurant voluntarily closed for six days for a thorough cleaning after 300 people were sickened by norovirus.

The Alpine Avenue facility Wild Chef moved into in 2011 was previously home to a Bennigan’s restaurant.
