My Town Walker: City kicks off trail improvement project Nov. 20

WALKER, Mich.—The City of Walker will kick off its community campaign to improve a major trail Thursday, Nov. 20.

The city wants to build a pedestrian tunnel under Lake Michigan Drive to connect two parts of the Fred Meijer Standale Trail. City officials believe the tunnel will improve safety on the trail, eliminating the need to cross at a very busy intersection. Residents will learn more about the project during a community kick-off breakfast Thursday morning.

Earlier this year, the City of Walker was awarded a grant for building the tunnel.  However, that funding will only be granted if the city can raise additional funds by June 2015. A similar tunnel project in Greenville cost $1.4 million.
