Dear Citizens of Walker,

A year ago in the Newsletter I described a cost savings measure adopted by the City Commission. We decided to close City Hall on Fridays and implemented a 4 day week with City Hall open from 7:30am to 5:30 pm Monday through Thursday. It was expected that this would result in a savings of approximately $150,000 over the course of the year.

It appears that this and other measures we adopted have resulted in a significant level of savings. Over the first 6 months the City saved $84,432. We estimate an additional $79,093 in the second 6 months for an estimated annual reduction in excess of $163,000.

Master plan and zoning at Wilson & Remembrance intersection

Many people are interested in the potential widening of Wilson Avenue. While the City continues to work with MDOT on future roadway concepts, current budgets will not allow major improvements for the foreseeable future.

Land use and zoning directly affect the "health" of a roadway. For example, think of Alpine Avenue or the East Beltline. Both experience significant traffic congestion due to their regional transportation function plus the intense commercial development that lines these corridors. With these examples in mind, the Walker Planning Commission has initiated a master plan review of property near the intersection of Wilson Avenue and Remembrance Road.
