Introduction:

A vacancy will be created in one of the two 2nd Ward Commission seats, effective January 1, 2013. The vacancy results from the resignation of Walker Mayor Rob VerHeulen, who was recently elected to represent the City of Walker as the 74th District House Representative in Lansing. Mayor Pro‐Tem Barbara Holt will assume the Mayor’s position on January 1, and the Commission will need to fill Commissioner Holt’s seat. The person who is selected to fill this seat will be required to run for election in November of 2013, for a term expiring in November of 2015.

The City of Walker is looking for citizens interested in volunteering their time by serving on various boards and commissions, Most groups meet only once per month in the evening. If you would like to be considered for an appointment position on one of the boards, please stop by the City Clerk's office to fill out an application or you can find an application on our web site, www.ci.walker.mi.us.

Because of recent legislation, School Board Elections are now held in even-year November dates when gubernatorial or presidential elections take place. If you would like to serve on the Board of Education, state law requires that you be a United States Citizen and a qualifi ed and registered elector of the school district you wish to represent by the fi ling deadline.

Candidates must fi le a Nominating Petition and an Affi davit of Identity no later than 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 14, 2012, to be included on the November 6, 2012, ballot. A nonrefundable $100 fi ling fee may be submitted in lieu of petition. Petitions must be fi led at the Kent County Clerk's Offi ce, 300 Monroe Avenue NW.

August Primary Election - Tuesday, August 7, 2012 (Must be Registered by July 9th)

November General Election - Tuesday, November 6, 2012 (Must be Registered by October 9th)

Polls are open from 7:00 AM - 8:00 PM. Visit the Election Information page under Clerk's Department on the City website for more information, sample ballots and to find out if you are registered at the correct address. If you are already registered and have not moved recently, you do not have to re-register for this election. This is for new voters and those that have moved recently but have not changed their address. If you have any questions, contact the Clerk's Office by phone at (616) 791-6865.

Absentee Ballots are available in the Clerk's Office approximately 45 days prior to the election. Call the office for an application or stop in to complete the form.

ABSENTEE VOTERS:

Amash staff to hold mobile office hours

U.S. Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI) announced that his district staff will hold mobile office hours on Monday, July 16, 2012, from 8 AM to 9:30 AM at locations in both Walker and Portland. Members of Amash’s staff will be on hand to provide assistance to those with federal issues or casework. No appointments are necessary and questions may be directed to Amash’s district office at (616) 451-8383.

“I understand that not every constituent has regular Internet access and some may have difficulty making it to our district office in Grand Rapids. I want to bring our office to them,” said Amash.
