Brianna Lee Foundation is hosting a Silent Auction on Saturday, May 17, 2014 from 2-5pm at The Meadows Golf Course, 645 W. Campus Dr in Allendale, MI  49401.

The mission of this foundation is to bring light in a time of sorrow. To provide a teddy bear as a reminder of your little angel and to let you know that you are not alone, but accompanied by the thoughts and prayers of everyone who has shared in this emotion.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—A Walker police officer killed while trying to stop two robbers is among the nearly three dozen officers who will be honored during the Police Memorial Day of Service ceremony Thursday, May 15.

The memorial will begin at 10 a.m. inside the Grand Rapids Police Department lobby, due to the weather.  Dave Hiller, the executive director of the Michigan Fraternal Order of Police, will be the guest speaker at the event. Those who will be honored are:

My Town Rockford: State lawmakers welcome Rockford water polo team to Capitol

ROCKFORD, Mich.—The Rockford boys’ water polo team got a warm welcome while visiting the Capitol recently.

State Reps. Peter MacGregor and Rob VerHeulen honored the team for back-to-back state championship victories.

“Few high school teams come together with as much success as the Rockford Rams have experienced over the past two years, and I am excited to celebrate this second state championship with them,” said MacGregor, R-Cannon Township. “I wish them even more success in the future, both in the pool and in the classroom.”

The Rams had a perfect 100-0 over the past two seasons, defeating Ann Arbor Pioneer 6-4 in November to earn their 10th title in school history.

“I am glad we could meet with Coach Dave McWatters and these exceptional young men today and congratulate them on their accomplishments,” said VerHeulen, R-Walker. “They are all fine representatives of the entire Rockford community.”

My Town: Kenowa Hills Superintendent evaluation April 23

ALPINE TOWNSHIP, Mich.—The Kenowa Hills Board of Education will hold a workshop meeting Wednesday to evaluate the district superintendent.

This is the third year of Gerald Hopkins’ three-year contract.  Hopkins previously worked at Wyoming Public Schools as an administrator.

Wednesday’s meeting will focus on Hopkins’ annual evaluation. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at the district administration building, located at 2325 Four Mile Road NW.  The meeting is open to the public, but the evaluation process will be a closed session.

WALKER, Mich.---  Students at Walker Charter Academy celebrated a fund-raising success this month with the help of many rolls of duct tape.

The school raised $13,632.20 for the American Heart Association during its “Jump Rope for Heart” and “Hoops for Heart” events.  On Thursday, April 3, every student that raised at least $50 got to duct tape the Walker Charter Academy's principal and gym teacher to the school’s basketball poles. Students also handed over a check to the American Heart Association for the fundraisers.

On average, Walker Charter Academy raises $10,000 for the American Heart Association during the events, making it one of the top 100 fundraising schools in the nation for these events.

KALAMAZOO, MIch.-- On Thursday, April 3, students at Paramount Charter Academy had the opportunity to duct tape their principal to the gymnasium wall.

The students have been logging their reading hours throughout March for a chance to duct tape their principal or dean as a reading reward. For each book read, the students earned a duct tape raffle ticket. The top reader in each wing got to choose who they wanted to duct tape to the wall.

The event is a way to celebrate the end of a successful March is Reading Month.

Paramount Charter Academy, located in Kalamazoo, is a free public charter school serving students in young 5s through eighth grade.

My Town Walker: Movie crews drop off donations to Humane Society of West Michigan

WALKER, Mich.—  The Humane Society of West Michigan got a surprise Friday  in its donation cart, courtesy of  the crew filming “The End of the Tour”. 

After finishing scenes with a dog featured in the film, production members visited HSWM to drop off the dog’s crate, as well as extra dog food and toys.  The crew even threw in some donations for the cats of HSWM.

“The End of the Tou”r stars Jason Segel, Jesse Eisenberg and Joan Cusack.  The film is based on David Lipsky’s book about his travels and conversations with author David Foster Wallace during a promotional book tour.

Crews began shooting scenes for the movie on I-196 in Grand Rapids on March 5.  Filming also took them to Grand Haven, Kentwood and the Cascade area.
