Independence Day message from your American Legion Clubs

Happy Independence Day

This message is from your local American Legion Clubs all over our Nation:

We, as Americans, are blessed to live in the “Home of the Brave.” Join us this Independence Day in celebrating the freedoms we hold so dear, while thanking the brave men and women who fought at home and abroad, and their families who sacrificed along with them, to allow us this privilege.

On Independence Day and every day, display your American flag prominently and your American Legion Auxiliary membership proudly to spread your passion and dedication to our nation’s veterans and to the best and largest women’s patriotic service organization in the world!

May God bless America and each one of you. Happy Independence Day!

Talented Student, Rachel Myszak, designs Coopersville C of C Logo

Rachel Myszak, a senior in Graphic Design at Coopersville High School, was recently recognized by the Coopersville Chamber of Commerce for her logo design. The logo was designed for the Chamber of Commerce marketing campaign; “Shop, Live, Love, Coopersville.”

This partnership between businesses and the Ottawa Area schools and the Community, is an initiative for “Doing More Together” and will offer more educational opportunities for area students.

Rachel states, “My first graphic design class in high school opened my eyes to design and my passion for it. Creating art is a personal process and knowing that people enjoy the completed piece in rewarding.”

This Mexican Rice is very good

This Mexican Rice is very good

I found this recipe on the Food Network/Pioneer Woman a couple weeks ago, it sounded good and so I made it. I really thought it was very tasty. I did not have cayenne pepper but used red pepper flakes instead and it still turned out just great. I did find I used a little more chicken broth than the recipe called for. I will certainly make it again.

Human Interest Story - What a Difference a Letter can make

Human Interest Story - What a Difference a Letter can make

In this day and age, a personal letter from someone seems to be a rarity. Not so though with my friend and former neighbor, Sally Howard.

Sally has a hobby of collecting autographs from “Potentially Famous People” and has done it for years, knowing that one day one of these autographs will pay off, whether in notoriety or value. She has hundreds of them filed away in order.

Just recently, Sally told me a story about an unusual experience she had and how it turned out. This is her story:

Sally attended the Michigan State Diving Championship meet in March of this year being her grandson, Cameron, a sophomore, was diving for Grandville High School. She said, “While I was attending, I got the chance of a lifetime to experience the true meaning of what it takes to be outstanding in performance and character. Sally is referring to Will Brenner who is a senior at Huron High School in Ann Arbor, MI.

My Town: Kent ISD Board names new superintendent

KENT COUNTY, Mich.-- The search for Kent Intermediate School District's next leader is over.

Grandville Superintendent Ron Caniff will replace Kevin Konarska, who is retiring.  Caniff was the lone finalist left after West Ottawa Superintendent Tom Martin withdrew his application for the job.  Caniff's final interview with the Kent ISD Board was held Tuesday.

“The Board is thrilled to welcome Ron Caniff as the next leader of Kent ISD,” said Kent ISD School Board President Claudia Bajema. “He brings 15 years of experience and the strong support of his peers.

“We are confident that the transition from Kevin to Ron will be very smooth, and that Ron will lead with the talent, energy, and interpersonal skills that we have enjoyed for the past nine years under Kevin’s leadership. We also wish Kevin all the best in the next phase of his life,” she added.
