Roundabout in Walker now open to drivers

WALKER, Mich. (WZZM) -- West Michigan's newest roundabout is now open. Crews worked for months on the project at the corner of Wilson Avenue and Remembrance Road in Walker.

It opened to traffic about around 5 p.m. Tuesday. The Michigan Department of Transportation says the old configuration was prone to more crashes because it was not a traditional 90-degree angle intersection.

"This has been a unique intersection for a long time, the geometry is very challenging," says Walker Mayor Mark Huizenga.

The roundabout is intended to improve safety for drivers and pedestrians.

"We know that number one.....this is about safety," says Huizenga.

For those not familiar with roundabouts, MDOT has an instructional video on its YouTube channel. You can watch it below.

Good Samaritans help driver on US-131

WALKER, Mich. (WZZM) -- A car fire on US-131 slowed things down Tuesday morning, but thanks to some good Samaritans, no one was hurt.

It was about 7:45 in the morning. Darcy Swope was on her way to work. She says the woman driving ahead of her had sparks coming from her car. "After a few minutes, I realized it was fire dripping from under her car. So I went around her and honked my horn to get her to pull over. And she did."

As soon at the driver came to a stop, Darcy ran up up to her. "I said, 'Get out your car. It’s on fire, get out, get out!'"

The driver went to Darcy's car and they called 911. As they waited for the fire department, another good Samaritan pulled up. "There was a Coopersville volunteer firefighter. He pulled in and went up to the car to make sure everyone was out. Then, he started directing traffic away from that lane."
