WALKER, Mich. (WZZM) -- The City of Walker has voted to restructure its public safety department and reinstate police chief and fire chief positions.

In 2010, the department heads were combined into one position, the director of public safety. Commissioners voted Monday night to reverse that decision.

The move will allow current public safety director Catherine Garcia-Lindstrom to focus on longterm planning, instead of what goes on day-to-day.

"It was my impression...when I became the public safety director that at some point the city might choose to go back," she said.

"This will still allow the public safety director to still have responsibility for special projects, and working with them, and maintain that brain trust," said Mayor Mark Huizenga.

The final vote was four to three. Members of Walker's police and fire departments will now come up with a plan to move forward.
