City commission postpones decision on additional bus lot

WALKER, Mich.—Grand Valley State University officials are pushing for a new public Park n’ Ride lot to keep up with increasing student demand for bus service.

The operations manager of Grand Valley State University’s Pew Campus says the new lot would be located at the former site of the American Metal and Stamping factory, on 4101 Lake Michigan Drive NW.   The new lot would contain 252 spaces.    The project would include expanding the city’s drainage system and adding a privacy fence and landscaping for the benefit of nearby homeowners.  LED lighting would also need to be added.

GVSU and The Rapid would pay for the project using a $360,000 federal grant.  GVSU would maintain the space, which would be located next to the Standale Park n’ Ride lot.

However, before work could even begin, GVSU and The Rapids would need to get a special permit from the city, as well as site plan approval.  During their meeting June 24, city commissioners voted to table the request until developers further research possible issues with security, trash, noise and traffic.
