Pink in the Rink Charity Hockey tourney benefits Gilda's Club

The 5th annual Pink in the Rink tournament is February 5th and 6th at Griffs Ice House in Grand Rapids with proceeds benefiting Gilda's Club.  Tourney host is the combined hockey team of Comstock Park/Northview/Sparta who will play in Pink jerseys featuring names of cancer fighters chosen by each player.  Friday at 545pm, will feature a Pre-game family recognition ceremony for the Slot family.  Kim Slot was a teacher at Northview Schools who lost her battle with cancer in September of 2015. Kim Slot was also the widow of fallen Walker Police officer Trevor Slot.   Multiple fundraisers will take place over the weekend including 50/50 raffles, and silent auctions to help "Stick it to Cancer"!   Here is a list of games:

Two teen golfers selected for The First Tee – Champions Tour Challenge in Florida

Two local teens are getting away from the winter cold and bringing their golf clubs to compete in The Golf to Paradise – First Tee Champions Challenge in Naples, Florida. 

Elias Aouad, a senior at East Grand Rapids High School and Andrew DeYoung, a junior at Kenowa Hills High School are being sent by the local non-profit The First Tee of West Michigan. The First Tee teaches students values and life skills through the game of golf and has had Aouad and DeYoung as participants since 2011.  

In conjunction with the ACE Group Classic, a Champions Tour event, six affiliates of The First Tee from across the country have been invited to participate.  The Challenge will be hosted at The TwinEagles Club in Naples, Florida on February 9 and 10.

Cat scratch(er) fever welcomed at Humane Society of West Michigan

WALKER, Mich. – The Humane Society of West Michigan is in need of cat scratcher donations.

The shelter has run out of Stretch & Scratch scratchers, which are attached to the animals cage doors.  HSWM says the scratchers help reduce stress, clean nails and entertain the cats.

HSWM is also planning another cat adoption special.  “Feline Frenzy” will take place September 10 through September 20.  All cats are $5 and kittens are $10.  HSWM is also offering an adopt one, get one free deal, thanks to a BISSELL Blocktail Party grant from the BISSELL Pet Foundation.

Juvenile Diabetes fundraiser at Kenowa Hills Soccer Game

Kenowa Hills High School soccer players, Kate Carey and Madi Buechner have organized a fundraiser to raise money for Juvenile Diabetes. This event will take place at 6:30pm on Thursday, May 2nd at Kenowa Hills, when Kenowa will host Muskegon Big Reds in a game titled, “The Blue Game." These two gals did this completely on their own, according to soccer coach, Jason Snyder.

To quote Kate, “We have one teammate who has juvenile diabetes and one other member, whose sister is affected by this disease.”

The Kenowa team has been selling T-Shirts and has several donated gifts that will be raffled off the day of the game. They are always looking for donations and hope to raise thousands of dollars for this foundation.

Jared Bradford, Athlete of the Week

Jared Bradford, Athlete of the Week

Jared Bradford has been named Athlete of the Week at Sparta High School. He excels at tennis and golf, both all conference.

Jared also led in scoring in basketball along with leading in assists. He holds the title as team leader in free throw percentage and 3 – point field goals. Sparta was the District Champions in basketball for the second year in a row.

At this time, Jared has no immediate plans for college.

Alyssa Kamyszek-All Conference OK Black

Alyssa Kamyszek made OK Black All Conference in Golf at Kenowa Hills High School where she is a senior this year. Alyssa also made All Conference in track last season.

She is President of the Honor Society at school and has been active in tutoring students in both Spanish and Math.

Alyssa plans to attend college next year and pursue a career in actuary science.
