Daylight Saving Time, the weekend of March 7-8, when everyone turns their clocks ahead, the American Red Cross reminds them to also take these steps to make sure their household is prepared for emergencies.

The Red Cross and the Muskegon Heights Fire Department have formed a partnership for preparedness and prevention to teach people how to be prepared for home fires and install smoke alarms where needed. My Town: Real estate professionals to give back to public servants

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.A group of real estate professionals have come together to create a service that is giving back to those who serve the public in the Grand Rapids area.

"U Deserve" has brought together several professionals who are dedicated to lowering costs associated with buying, selling or refinancing a home for active military members, veterans, firefighters, police officers, EMS providers, health care professionals and educators.

“Growing up with a father who served in the National Guard and as a police officer, I was able to see first-hand how much public service individuals give back to their communities,” said Kevin Wildman, founder of U Deserve.  “U Deserve is a way of saying ‘thank you’ to those individuals.”

Time to Inventory your Freezer & make some Soup

Time to Inventory your Freezer & make some Soup

Just recently, while looking for something in my freezer, I realized it was time to really go through everything to make certain I was not losing food because of freezer burn. Winter is the perfect time to clean freezers. I decided to eat from my freezer for a week and see what happened.

I found good things that I had labeled and forgotten about. When the week was over, I had a much more organized freezer and at the same time, saved myself a trip or two to the store.

Just a Cooking Tip when making Pastry Cream/Pudding

Just a Cooking Tip when making Pastry Cream/Pudding

Not too long ago, I posted a recipe for Pastry Cream, a real versatile dessert item. In most cook books and even on food TV shows, when making this or any kind of pudding, they will instruct you to cover the pastry cream or pudding with plastic wrap right on the surface of it, to avoid a skin forming while cooling.

I personally never liked doing that for two reasons; one, you actually lose quite a bit of the cooked product when you take the plastic off, and two, I didn’t like the idea of plastic wrap on the pastry cream or pudding itself. I decided to try something different and it worked just fine.

After cooking to the proper stage, I put a piece of paper towel over the pan and then placed the cover over this on the pan. I then put it in the fridge to cool completely. When I was ready to use it, I found the paper towel stuck just a little in a couple places on the pan, but the pastry cream was perfect.
