LANSING, Mich. (State of Michigan) – Veterans from across West Michigan can find out what their military service has earned them and what a grateful community has to offer them at the 2014 Grand Rapids Veteran Expo, Sept. 5-6 at the DeltaPlex Arena.

“Whether you hung up your uniform five months ago, five years ago or fifty years ago, there’s something here for you,” said Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency Director Jeff Barnes. “We want this to be a one-stop shop for veterans and their families, with services and information for every chapter of their lives.”

My Town: Restaurant holds benefit for shelter animals Aug. 27

WALKER, Mich.—Enjoy a meal out while helping animals in need of homes during a fundraiser at Logan’s Roadhouse Wednesday, Aug. 27.

From 4 p.m. to 11 p.m., Logan’s Alpine Avenue location will be donating 20 percent of sales to support the pets at Humane Society of West Michigan.  During its last fundraiser for HSWM, the restaurant raised nearly $2,000. 

Patrons should print of the flyer above this story in order for a portion of their bill to count toward the fundraiser.

My Town Walker: How volunteers are improving Blandford Nature Center

WALKER, Mich.—Blandford Nature Center is thanking an army of volunteers from GE Aviation for improving its grounds.

On Aug. 8, more than 100 volunteers from the company split into six teams to tackle a variety of projects, from planting apple trees and native shrubs to installing control rocks and interpretive signs and updating the playscape. The work was also paid for through a grant by the GE Volunteers Foundation.

WALKER, Mich.-- The Walker/Standale Downtown Development Authority invites the community to a big band performance Aug. 14.

Bring your family and lawn chairs or blankets to the Walker Community Park located at 700 Cummings Ave. for this family-friendly, alcohol-free evening. From 7 p.m. through 9 p.m.,  the public can experience a free performance by the Boogie Woogie Babies,  as well as children’s activities and food vendors.

My Town: Local Little League team to play for state title Wednesday

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--- Western Little League Minors are following in the footsteps of the league's senior baseball team, with a run for the Little League State Championship title.

The 9/10 division beat South Portage Tuesday night in the state semi-final game, 11-4.  Western remains undefeated in the state tournament (5-0) with an overall record of 12-1.  Western will take on Essexville-Hampton for the state title  at 6 p.m. Wednesday on the Southern Little League’s East Field, located at 2525 Kalamazoo Ave. SE in Grand Rapids.

The 9/10 year old division of the Little League State Tournament began Friday, July 25 with 16 teams.  Detroit Red Wings’ Luke Glendening, who is a former Southern Little League player, helped kick off the competition.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.--- Just one West Michigan team remains in the running for the Little League State Tournament  title.

The Western team based out of the Walker/Standale area carries a 5-2 record into Tuesday night’s semi-final game against South Portage.  The game will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Southern Little League’s East Field, located at 2525 Kalamazoo Ave. SE in Grand Rapids.

The 9/10 year old division of the Little League State Tournament began Friday, July 25 with 16 teams.  Detroit Red Wings’ Luke Glendening, who is a former Southern Little League player, helped kick off the competition.

My Town: Free Hand delivers free performance July 24

STANDALE, Mich.—  Take a trip back in time Thursday night when Free Hand takes the stage for the 2014 Standale Summer Concert Series.

The band will begin performing music from the 1940s at 7 p.m.  The concert at Walker Community Park is free, but visitors should bring their own blankets and lawn chairs.  This year's series features more kid-friendly activities, including face painting and coloring contests.

The rest of the summer concert lineup is as follows:

  • Thursday, Aug. 14 – Boogie Woogie Babies
  • Thursday, Aug. 28 – The Lazy Blue Tunas

This is the second year for the Standale Summer Concert Series. Each concert attracts an average of 300 people.
