United Methodist Church of the Dunes to Present Christmas Eve Candlelight Services

DEC. 17, 2013, GRAND HAVEN, MICH.—United Methodist Church of the Dunes (UMCD), at 717 Sheldon Road in Grand Haven, will present its annual Christmas Eve Candlelight Worship Services on Dec. 24 at 7 and 11 p.m. The general public is invited to attend free of charge. The theme for both services will be “A Festival of Lessons and Carols” by Hal H. Hopson. Featured will be readings and scriptural lessons of faith, along with the following musical numbers: • O Come All Ye Faithful • The God of Abr’am Praise • Lo, How a Rose • There is no Rose • Good Christian Friends, Rejoice • Angels We Have Heard on High • Joy to the World The 7 p.m. event is a “Family Service.” The UMCD Youth and Children’s Choirs, plus chimers and bell ringers will be featured. The 11 p.m. event will feature the UMCD Bells of Glory and Chancel Choirs. “The 11 p.m. candlelight service is more of a contemplative and reflective service,” said Jean Schuitman, director of music and organist at UMCD. Fifteen minutes prior to both services attendees will be presented with joyful prelude music and traditional Christmas songs. All attendees will be able to join in the singing of popular holiday music, from 6:45-7 p.m. and also at 10:45 to 11 p.m. Anyone interested in attending is welcome to join the festivities. The core purpose of the UMC-Dunes states: “We are a family of faith who seeks to grow in God’s grace and love, challenges and equips all members to be faithful disciples, to share the Good News and demonstrate and reflect the love of God.” Founded in 1873, UMC-Dunes moved to its present location at 717 Sheldon Road, Grand Haven in February 1962. The church provides a variety of community outreach ministries to women, children, men and families in the area, supports Family Promise and the annual CROP Walk, offers membership in its United Methodist Men and United Methodist Women groups, plus book and Bible studies, a weekly creative arts and crafts group, participation in Coast Guard Festival, plus Christian service projects to ministries in Panama and Haiti. Children’s, youth and adult educational programs, book study groups, arts and crafts groups, plus weekly Wednesday evening dinners are provided throughout the year.
