My Town: Solar energy industry leader to expand in Walker

 WALKER, Mich.—  A California-based company is expanding its operations in West Michigan.

SolarBOS is an industry leader in the Balance of System segment of the solar industry.  The business was founded in 2004 and is now looking to invest approximately $884,000 in a new facility in Walker.  SolarBOS anticipates hiring 50 to 56 employees over the next three years, with help from a $250,000 performance-based grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

“West Michigan’s manufacturing sector is unique in its diversity and talented workforce,” said Jason Schripsema, chairman and CTO of SolarBOS, Inc. “We hope to leverage both of those assets in this new chapter of SolarBOS growth story.”

My Town: Millennium Park to host National Trails Day celebration June 7

WYOMING, Mich.—  Community members are invited to celebrate National Trails Day this weekend with a one mile or two mile walk through Kent County’s Millennium Park.

Recreation departments from Wyoming, Walker, Kentwood and Kent County are teaming up to host the Fun & Fitness Walk this Saturday, June 7.  The event is one of more than 2,000 activities planned nationwide, to promote park activity as part of a healthy lifestyle.

The national Walk in the Park event will begin at 9 a.m. Registration will be available on site that morning.  Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan will provide water and snacks. Strollers are permitted; however, pets are not allowed. Area parks and recreation departments and trail advocacy groups will be on hand to share information on local walking clubs and trails.

WALKER, Mich.—Blandford Nature Center is looking for another employee to join their team.

The center recently posted an opening for a part-time development administrative assistant.  A qualified candidate will have a degree in nonprofit or public administration with experience in fundraising and working knowledge of Giftworks, MS Office Suite, Social Media and WordPress.

My Town: Governor names Michigan Tree Fruit Commission

LANSING, Mich. (State of Michigan)– Gov. Rick Snyder today announced nine appointments to the newly created Michigan Tree Fruit Commission.

The nine-member commission was established by growers in 2014 to improve the economic position and competitiveness of the Michigan tree fruit industry.

“The food and agriculture industry is one of the pillars of Michigan’s economy,” Snyder said. “I am confident that this group of appointees will work hard to grow this sector of our economy.”

Initial terms expiring March 1, 2015:

Patrick Goodfellow, of Sparta, is the owner of PG Orchards LLC. He previously worked as a plumbing apprentice and maintenance worker which is beneficial in the day-to-day operations of a farm. Goodfellow graduated from West Catholic High School. He will represent fruit growers in District 2.

My Town Walker: Registration open and volunteers needed for Longest Day 5k

WALKER, Mich.—Community members are encouraged to celebrate the summer solstice by breaking a sweat on the trails of Blandford Nature Center.

Registration is now open for the Longest Day 5k Trail Run, which will take place Saturday, June 21. The event is open to everyone- from leisurely walkers to competitive runners.  The celebration includes a taste of local beer.   For registration and volunteer information, click here.

My Town: West Catholic greenhouse takes shape

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.— Construction is underway on a greenhouse designed by pre-engineering students at West Catholic High School.

The students raised more than $8,000 for the greenhouse, which they will design and build right outside the school.  In a photo posted on West Catholic High School’s Facebook page on May 6, you can see the students putting up the walls.
