My Town: Reuse retailer opens in Walker

WALKER, Mich.— A new store giving old building materials a second chance at life is now open in Walker.

Odom Reusable Building Materials announced the opening of its newest storefront Tuesday.  The 8,200-square-foot store is located at 1029 4 Mile Road NW, just west of Alpine Avenue. 

Odom RE-USE offers store credit for building materials including doors, windows, cabinets, sinks, vanities, flooring, trim, lighting and shelving.    The store then sells the reclaimed materials at a discount.

In celebration of its new store, Odom RE-USE is offering up to 20 percent off its prices to customers through Aug. 31.  The business is also offering several free workshops on creating flower boxes and bookshelves throughout the month.

WALKER, Mich.—Walker residents looking for a trim have a new option.

Supercuts celebrated its grand opening this past weekend.  The salon is located at 3150 Alpine Ave. NW in the Green Ridge Square Shopping Center.  In honor of its opening, Supercuts is offering $9.99 haircuts through Monday, Aug. 18.  The salon’s standard prices are $12.95 per haircut for adults and seniors and $10.95 per haircut for children ages 10 and under. Supercuts also offers styling, coloring and facial waxing.

My Town: Construction company donates talents to West Michigan's homeless

WALKER, Mich.--  The sale of a new home in Walker is helping West Michigan’s homeless.

After handing over the keys to the new owners of 4588 Gordonshire NW, Ver Woert  Construction handed over a $35,500 check to Degage Ministries.   The company built the home with the intention of donating the proceeds to the charity.  Owner Ken Ver Woert came up with the idea after listening to a sermon at his church about using his gifts and talents for God’s glory.

“My firm has enjoyed building this home, knowing our hard work would be benefiting others in need,” said Ver Woert. “We are also grateful for the kind hearts of our subcontractors who pledged to join us in this mission, raising the amount we were able to provide Degage Ministries.”

My Town EGR: West Catholic students to earn credits from Aquinas College

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.—Students of West Catholic High School will have a new opportunity to earn college credits beginning this fall.

The school is teaming up with Aquinas College to create a dual enrollment pilot program.  Eligible juniors and seniors will have a chance to take Principles of Accounting in the fall and Principles of Management in the spring.  The college courses will have the same rigor and expectations as those taught on Aquinas’ campus, but will be taught at the high school by Aquinas faculty.  West Catholic students will not need to pay additional tuition for the classes, but will be required to purchase their own books.

My Town Walker: Business targeted twice by thieves

WALKER, Mich.—A Walker business owner is cleaning up after thieves targeted his shop for a second time in as many months.

Nick Lawrence says someone broke into his shop, Hyzer’s Disc Golf and Smoke Shop Sunday night, shattering glass display cases and stealing small amounts of merchandise.  Lawrence says it’s the second time in as many months the business at 4150 Lake Michigan Drive NW has been broken into.

My Town: Meijer sponsors program for booming prescription drug industry

WALKER, Mich.— Meijer is sponsoring a program to help meet the need of the growing prescription drug industry.

The Walker-based retailer is teaming up with the West Michigan Center for Arts + Technology to train the under and unemployed to become pharmacy technicians. 

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of pharmacy technicians needed is expected to increase 20 percent by 2022.  Meijer also anticipates higher demand because of national health care and an aging patient population that relies on more prescriptions.
