AMC renovating GR's Star Theatre

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- Movie theater chain AMC is renovating its 18-screen Star Theatre in Grand Rapids.

The multi-million-dollar project started this month. Crews are replacing carpets and restrooms, "enhancing" the concession area, and making other building improvements. The company will also update the theaters with new screens and sound systems.

The company is also trying make the movie experience more comfortable, with power seats that recline.

The first auditoriums should be ready by early October, with the entire project wrapping up by late November to early December.

Popeyes to open second restaurant in G.R. this fall

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WZZM) -- A second Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen restaurant is coming to Grand Rapids this fall.

NAI Wisinski of West Michigan represented the buyer in the purchase of land for the new restaurant. It will be located at 2150 Alpine NW in Grand Rapids.

Popeyes is currently under construction and is expected to be completed in early November.

18th Cops Fore Kids golf outing held

WALKER, Mich. (WZZM) -- Police officers hit the links with their Cops Fore Kids golf outing.

The event is in its 18th year and promotes friendship between officers and young people.

It started Friday morning at Gracewil Country Club on 4 Mile near Peach Ridge.

Officers are teaming up with kids from a number of local groups and others who have had run-ins with the law and are on probation.

The all-day event featured a continental breakfast, team photos a 9-hole golf scramble and lunch.

There's also be a raffle, as well as door prizes for everyone.

Del Shannon Days Celebration this Week

The 25th Annual Summerfest Celebration featuring Del Shannon Days in Coopersville, MI unofficially started on Saturday, August 1st with “Quilts and their Stories” Show. There are more than 140 different quilts to view on display. Officially the festival was renamed the “Del Shannon Days” in 2014.

Antique tractors go on display at the Farm Museum on Tuesday, August 4th. Del Shannon Days officially kicks off from 4 – 8pm Wednesday, the 5th with “Kids Fest,” held at the corner of Main & Mason St.  The Teddy Bear Parade starts at 5pm. There will be plenty of different games and events for children throughout the celebration.

Friday Night, the 7th, features the Annual “Car Cruise” starting at 6pm throughout the Village ending at Keyser Manufacturing for the after-cruise party. Saturday, the 8th will feature more than 600 show cars, trucks and motorcycles. The show runs all day beginning at 7am.

Rebuilt McDonald's opens on Alpine Ave.

WALKER, Mich. (WZZM) -- The newly built McDonald's on Alpine Ave. has reopened after two and a half months of construction.

Thursday morning, the owner and employees cut the ribbon on the redesigned restaurant located just south of Three Mile Rd. NW.

The location is one of just two McDonald's in West Michigan featuring the new design. In addition to an improved interior design, the building's footprint has been moved forward and it will have double drive-through lanes.

The McDonald's also plans to hire 20 new employees.

Walker fall is 4th workplace fatality since June 16

WALKER, Mich. (WZZM) -- A Kentwood man who fell to his death Wednesday at a Walker industrial plant is the fourth on-the-job fatality in West Michigan since mid-June.

Walker Police responded to Profile Industrial Packaging, 1990 Avastar Parkway NW, about 9:50 a.m. on a report that a worker suffered critical injuries in a fall. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

The death comes one day after 57-year-old Wanda Jean Holbrook of Grand Rapids died in an industrial accident at Ventra Ionia Main – the former American Bumper & Manufacturing Co. in Ionia.

Holbrook was trapped in robotic machinery at Ventra, 14 N. Beardsley St. at 2:20 p.m. Co-workers pulled her from the machine but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Holbrook worked there for 12 years in the maintenance department.

The facility once housed American Bumper, where two workers were fatally crushed in a press in 1991.
