Man enters plea in Walker motel meth cook, explosion

WALKER, Mich. (WZZM) – A Kentwood man with a history of drug abuse admitted to running a methamphetamine lab at a Walker motel that resulted in an explosion and small fire that left him with burns to his hands.

Jason Edward Vroma appeared in Kent County Circuit Court today where he pleaded guilty to operating a methamphetamine lab. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors dropped a habitual felony offender charge.

The methamphetamine operation took place in a bathroom at America's Best Value Inn & Suites at Alpine Avenue and Three Mile Road NW.

Myers ran out of the bathroom Feb. 24 with his hands on fire and extinguished the flames in a snowbank, according to earlier testimony. Myers and a co-defendant were on the run until police caught up with them a month later.

Become a Bone Marrow Donor; Save a Life

While volunteering this past weekend with WZZM13 and our “Make a Difference Day” event on the GVSU campus in Allendale, I was surprised to realize how little I really knew about bone marrow transplants. I’m sure a lot of you feel the same.

The main thing I learned was that 75% of the time, if you needed a bone marrow transplant, your immediate family would not qualify, meaning they would not be a match. That is when you turn to a place such as Michigan Blood. They are also connected to the National Registry.

Woman honored for decision to buckle up

WALKER, Mich. (WZZM) -- Seatbelts save lives. It's a proven fact, yet still there are some people who refuse to buckle up.

If you're one of them, this just might change your mind.

Police say 23-year-old Ashley Peet is alive today because she put on her seatbelt.

In April of this year, Ashley was riding in the rear seat of a friend's car when another vehicle slammed into them at the intersection of M-57 and Northland Drive.

Ashley spent 19 days in intensive care and has gone through several surgeries, but is expected to be okay.

Her decision to buckle up is being attributed to her father's passion, always encouraging people to use their seat belts.

Her dad, Jack Peet, spent 40 years in traffic safety with the Michigan State Police and AAA spreading the word.
